Strategic Review of Beef Factory Grading on Behalf of Namibian Government
Business Challenge
A globalised market for food commodities requires a common set of standards. This is particularly true in developing economies attempting to improve their production standards, increase national food security and improve their capacity to export to OECD countries. The Namibian government needed a sectoral analysis of its beef industry, to compare and contrast the grading system used in Namibia to that used in the European Union.
Our Approach
We were retained to conduct a strategic review of beef factory grading standards on behalf of the Namibian Government. We carried out the following:
- A review of the current and potential value of the Namibian beef sector.
- An analysis of the key contrasting factors between the factory grading systems operating in Namibia and EU.
- An analysis of farming practices, market requirements and livestock performances between the two markets.
Benefits & Value
We identified the key structural, economic and market differences between the two markets. We used this to develop recommendations on the development and application of best practice beef factory grading standards within Namibia’s beef processing industry.
We provided a number of practical strategies for the improvement and regulation of the beef grading standards and practices in the Namibian market. As a result Namibia has been able to improve the quality of its own food supply, improve its national food security and improve its capacity to export to OECD countries.
